Julie A. Haugen, MD
Kathleen Kowalewski, MOA
Obstetrics, Gynecology & Infertility
Dr. Julie Haugen is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and truly loves the practice of medicine. Her goal is to partner with her patients to help them achieve optimal health and wellness. She feels that with adequate information, her patients can be empowered to make the health care decisions that are right for their individual circumstances.

Whether her patients are welcoming the birth of a new baby, working through the uncertainty of testing for genetic predisposition to cancer, or deciding to embark on major surgery, Dr. Haugen feels honored to help with their medical needs. She is inspired by the strength, dignity, and diversity of the patients she has cared for during her years as an obstetrician and gynecologist. Her patients have ranged in age from less than a year to over 90, and she now cares for a growing number of young adult patients that she delivered as a baby!
Dr. Haugen was born and raised in Iowa and attended college at the University of Iowa, majoring in biomedical engineering. She graduated at the top of her class at a time when women were greatly underrepresented in the field. She went on to attend medical school, also at the University of Iowa. In 1995, she completed residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, Irvine, where she was elected to be the chief resident and received awards for outstanding teaching. She practiced briefly in Houston, Texas, prior to moving to Oregon and joining Pacific Women’s Center in 1997.
She enjoys her chosen career even more each year. Her passion for medicine persists because the practice of medicine is always evolving. Dr. Haugen has found exciting new challenges in organizing the multidisciplinary Obstetric Simulations at RiverBend Hospital, which prepares the team for any unpredictable emergency situations that can arise. Among her gynecologic surgical techniques, she incorporates minimally invasive robotic surgery to optimize patient outcomes and speed recovery. Her practice is informed by the wisdom she has gained through her years of clinical experience, her continued dedication to the acquisition of new knowledge, and her personal familiarity with the vulnerability of being a patient.
In her spare time, it is the natural world that enriches her soul. She loves living in Oregon with her husband and three children. She can be found running on the Ridgeline Trail, hiking up the Butte, stand-up paddle boarding on the Deschutes River, biking off road trails, skiing on Mt. Bachelor, or just listening to the sounds of nature.
Little Known Fact: In keeping with her philosophy of continuing to learn new skills, Dr. Haugen has taken up dancing lessons with her husband. Fortunately, their dance teacher is extremely patient with these two former engineers who are making slow but steady progress in their quest not to step on each other’s feet.
