Severe Period Pain – PMS, Cramps, and Dysmenorrhea

Pain during your period is a very common experience. Most women deal with cramping and aching in their lower abdomen on a regular basis. This is what is known as primary dysmenorrhea, or menstrual cramps.

If you experience intense cramping or pain that lasts longer than usual, you may be dealing with secondary dysmenorrhea.

This severe period pain will usually start earlier in your menstrual cycle and last much longer than the normal 2 to 4 days. The painful cramps can cause distress and reduce your quality of life.

If this is a problem you deal with, you should schedule a visit with your physician at Pacific Women’s Center as soon as possible. Secondary dysmenorrhea is almost always caused by a more serious condition, including:

  • Endometriosis
  • Adenomyosis
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  • Fibroids
