How Do I Know When I’m Ovulating?

If you and your partner are planning on becoming pregnant, learning your ovulation cycles should be one of the first things you do to ensure a successful, natural conception.

Ovulation occurs when an egg is released from the ovary and becomes ready for fertilization. During this fertile part of your menstrual cycle is when you have the highest chances of conception. The duration of ovulation and optimum fertility varies from woman to woman, but the window is often only 2 to 4 days.

To take full advantage of your ovulation, you can learn how to calculate approximately when you will be ovulating next. The simplest way to estimate this is by figuring out when your next menstrual period is due to start. From that day, count back 12 to 14 days. This will give a rough estimate for when you will be ovulating.

Unfortunately, the method above is by no means foolproof and the estimate is not 100% accurate. However, at Pacific Women’s Center, we have access to the latest tests and technology to help you more accurately track your ovulation.
