Keeping track of your health can be tough in your 20s. There are so many new experiences, that sometimes health can take a back seat. Women who follow these five essential health rules will be able to make their 20s some of the healthiest years of their lives.

Rule #1: Get Active

The great thing about our community is that there are endless ways to get outside and stay active. Social clubs & recreation centers all around Eugene provide recreational & club sports that improve your health while keeping it fun. Keep an eye out for groups that explore local natural areas on Saturday hikes or go for bike rides on nearby trails.

Making time in your busy schedule for sports & outdoor activities is a great way to reduce stress, stay fit, and meet new people.

Rule #2: Keep a Routine

If you’re in your 20s and in school or work at a job, you’ve probably realized that there is just not enough time in the day to do everything you want to do. It’s totally possible to get overwhelmed by all of the classes, work schedules, and social activities. If you want to make the most of your 20s, sit down and create a routine that allows you to take it all in, while keeping your head from spinning.

When making your routine, make sure that your schedule isn’t too heavy with just one thing. Class or work are both very important, but without time spent relaxing and being with friends you can miss out on what your 20s are all about. A routine that includes physical activities, socializing, and work is a great start. Then add in some time to try out a few new activities or personal projects that you’re interested in.

Sticking to a balanced routine can help you stay focused and reduce stress.

Rule #3: Consider Contraception

Your 20s are a time when many young women start making important personal health choices. Taking responsibility for your sexual health is an important first step in that process. Finding the right type of contraception for you means you’ll need to learn about your options.

You’ve probably heard of popular options for contraception like condoms and birth control pills. These are good options, but they aren’t all that is available. Contraceptives like the Nuvaring and the patch are other options. Implantable contraceptives, IUD’s and injections are avenues that don’t require sticking to a daily or weekly schedule, so these options are also worth considering. Our contraception information offers a complete list of the options available to you.

Schedule an appointment with a doctor to make sure you know all of your choices and what will work best for you.

Every woman has different goals for their contraception and PWC can help you to find the perfect fit.

Rule #4: Ace Your Exams

If you’re in college you know plenty about exams. But do you know about the other types of exams you should be scheduling in your 20s? Scheduling regular doctor appointments for a pap smear, breast and pelvic exam is crucial to maintaining your health during these years.

Annual exams have plenty of benefits. They can catch things like cancers early on and screen for STD’s,  as well as alert a doctor to any other potential health problems that you may be experiencing. There is no ignoring these regular exams. They play a very important role in your health and well-being at every stage in your life.

Rule #5: Get Vaccinated

Human Papilloma Virus, or HPV, is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world. Most times, it doesn’t even present any symptoms and sometimes it doesn’t need medical attention. It can sometimes cause cervical cancers or genital warts, and that means that getting an HPV vaccine should be something every woman in her teens and 20s should consider.

It’s never easy to think about vaccinations or types of cancer, but being in your 20s means it’s time for taking steps for the future. Talking with a doctor about an HPV vaccine is a big step in planning for a healthy future.

Your 20s can be filled with so much fun, discovery, and personal growth. Don’t put any of these health rules off, schedule an appointment at Pacific Women’s Center and start making choices that will keep you healthy and happy for many years to come.
